Early this morning, around 1:30 a.m., residents in Surfside were jerked awake by a boom so loud it sounded like a bomb had gone off. The sound of ambulance sirens and the flashing of emergency lights grew nearer as first responders secured the scene at Champlain Towers, a 12-story beachfront condo building at 88th Street and Collins Avenue. As families slept inside, half of the building collapsed into rubble.
