Are Democrats being hypocritical on illegal immigration?

The United States cannot handle the invasion of illegal immigrants crossing the southern border each day. The Democrats and the Biden administration’s relaxed attitudes toward illegal immigration have only helped fuel the number of immigrants attempting to cross over. An estimated 3.5 million illegal immigrants have crossed the border since Biden has been in office.

In March 2021, two months after Biden took office, a band of immigrants bizarrely wore shirts pleading for the Biden administration to allow them into the country. Some of the migrants said that they heard rumors that Biden would let them cross which is why they showed up.

Experts have already said that the crisis at the border is historically the worst it has ever been in American history. Their attitudes and policies are enabling human trafficking and drug smuggling. During this administration, we have already experienced the worst known human smuggling catastrophe in modern U.S. history near the U.S.-Mexican border.

Yet Democrats have not taken any substantial steps to dispel their narrative that they are openly welcoming illegal immigrants into the country. They have proved to be inept and hypocritical when it comes to their policies on illegal immigration. A few recent events that made headlines have only aided this argument..

GOP leaders in Texas, Florida and Arizona have sent illegal immigrants that have come across Texas and Arizona’s borders into Democratic-led sanctuary cities such as Washington D.C., New York City, and Chicago.

“President Biden’s inaction at our southern border continues putting the lives of Texans — and Americans — at risk and is overwhelming our communities,” Texas Governor Greg Abbott said in a statement. “To continue providing much-needed relief to our small, overrun border towns, Chicago will join fellow sanctuary cities Washington, D.C. and New York City as an additional drop-off location.”

The leaders of these cities have hypocritically been in opposition to migrants being sent to their cities. This year, when Abbott and other GOP leaders began to bus illegal immigrants from their states to sanctuary cities, it sparked criticism from the Democratic leaders of each city. New York City Democratic Mayor Eric Adams condemned Abbott and accused him of human trafficking because they got the migrants into buses under false pretenses.

This is a different stance about welcoming migrants than what he has said in the past. In June 2021, Adams proclaimed New York was a refuge “city of immigrants.” In October 2021, he reaffirmed that under his administration New York City would remain a sanctuary city.

In 2016, Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser reaffirmed that her city was a sanctuary city. However, when migrants were bussed into her city this year her rhetoric was less than welcoming to migrants. Earlier this month, she proclaimed that Washington D.C. does not have the “infrastructure” to accommodate more migrants coming into her city. “We don’t have the infrastructure to handle this type of and level of immigration to our city,” she said. “We don’t have the ability, we are not Texas.”

Bowser then declared a public health emergency in response to the influx of migrants coming in from Texas.

Democratic Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot vowed to welcome migrants bussed in from the southern border. However, she was accused of hypocrisy when migrants coming into her city were shipped to a suburb outside of Chicago. She accused Abbott of being “without any shame or humanity.”

Florida Governor Ron Desantis sent two busloads of migrants to Martha’s Vineyard. Although the island is not declared a sanctuary city, the state has a few sanctuary cities. Many affluent people such as Barack Obama have homes in Martha’s Vineyard. Desantis has been heavily criticized for the move but it sent a loud message to the nation.

“States like Massachusetts, New York and California will better facilitate the care of these individuals who they have invited into our country by incentivizing illegal immigration through their designation as ‘sanctuary states’ and support for the Biden administration’s open border policies,” Taryn Fenske, communications director for Desantis, said.

In short, these Democratic cities are now feeling some of the pain border cities have experienced dealing with illegal immigration in their own backyards. None of these Democratic leaders have spoken publicly about the Biden administration sending immigrants into different detention facilities in the country via bus or airplane.

They are now scrambling to accommodate these migrants but have not laid out a long-term plan on how to deal with them. They also have not stopped to consider the perspectives of the states that sent the immigrants to them. These states have been dealing with the effects of illegal immigration for a long time, and now it’s the Democrats’ turn.

In conclusion, sending immigrants into sanctuary cities has shined a spotlight nationally on Democrats’ hypocrisy on how to handle illegal immigrants. Their makeshift policies cannot be sustained long-term.
