President Joe Biden’s chief diversity and inclusion officer is leaving the White House, The Messenger has learned.

Michael Leach, a special assistant to the president, was the White House’s first-ever head of diversity and inclusion. A former chief people officer and head of diversity and inclusion on Biden’s 2020 presidential campaign, Leach is credited with diversifying Biden’s primary and general election teams and White House staff.

In a statement to The Messenger, Leach called his historic role “the honor of a lifetime.”

“I am forever grateful to God, President Biden, and countless others for entrusting me to pioneer such a critical role during this pivotal moment in our nation’s history,” he said. “I remain inspired by the people I had the privilege of serving alongside, and I am encouraged by the progress we have made together.”
