Three additional New Haven police officers have been placed on paid leave after a man was seriously injured while in police custody when an officer maneuvered to avoid a crash on Sunday. Two officers had previously been placed on paid leave.
An officer who was transporting Richard Cox to the police department had to make an “evasive maneuver” to prevent getting into a car crash in the area of Division and Mansfield streets, officials said, and the told the officer that he was injured during the incident, and he also alerted authorities at the police department. Hospital officials said Mr. Cox underwent surgery and is partially paralyzed.
